Father's Art and Craft for Kids

Even if Dad says he wants nothing for Father's Day, we just can't resist celebrating our favorite guy in a big way with a hearty Father's Day breakfast in bed followed by a day of fun Father's Day activities. But let's face it—nothing says "I love you" better than a heartfelt, homemade DIY present, card, or keepsake from you and the kids. We've put together a list of the best Father's Day crafts for all ages, from toddlers to elementary aged children to teens, that are sentimental, useful, and just plain sweet.

So your family's crafting skills are, well, limited. No worries! Many of these projects are surprisingly simple to make. From picture frames to puppets, there's something for every skill level. We bet you even have most of the supplies lying around the house already. For the dad who loves an afternoon on the course, there are ideas for customized golf gifts, as well as for the grill master of the house.

We're sure you'll find a perfect idea for all the special dads in your life, including grandfathers and stepdads. What he'll love the most is that these Father's Day crafts come straight from the hearts—and hands—of his biggest fans.

1 Paint Can Bottle Opener

You may already have the tool—a paint can opener—needed to create this craft laying around the house. If not, a quick trip to the local hardware and craft store will get you set up to show dad just how clever, inventive, and crafty you are!

To make:
Wrap the stick part of a hardware store paint can opener with oven bake clay, forming the clay into desired shape. Bake according to the package directions. Once cool, paint clay with acrylic paint. Once dry seal with satin finish Mod Podge.

2 #1 Dad Pinch Bowl

Make dad a catch-all dish where he can stash those trinkets you collect together on your outdoor adventures.

To make: Pinch and shape oven-bake clay into a small, shallow dish. Bake according to manufacturers directions. Paint as desired with acrylic paint. Once dry, seal with satin-finish Mod Podge.

3 Drop Cloth Picnic Blanket

Dad will love lounging on this DIY picnic blanket with the family on a lazy Sunday afternoon. And it's super simple—you'll only need a few easy to find supplies to make it!

To make:
Wash and iron a desired size hardware store canvas drop cloth. Use fabric paint (or mix fabric paint fixative with acrylic paint per package directions). Tape off desired pattern with painter's tape and paint drop cloth. Allow to dry and head outside.

4 Vintage Map Wall Art

Memorialize a vacation, hiking excursion, rowing adventure, or road trip by outlining the route traversed with ribbon or twine
on a new or vintage map. Hold both options in place on the map with hot-glue.

5 DIY Koozie

Dad will be grinning from ear to ear while sipping cans of his favorite summer chiller out of this DIY drink koozie.

To make: Cut a length of craft foam that is just shorter than a can. Wrap around can and cut the length so that it just overlaps itself. Have kids draw a picture on the foam with fabric markers. Add a piece of velcro to the back to keep it closed.

6 DIY Grilling Apron

This is the ideal gift for the dad who loves to spend time out back barbecuing a delicious meal for friends, family, and especially the crafter of this fun apron.

To make: Use fabric markers or fabric paint and a small paint brush to paint "grill master" and a grill on a plain canvas apron. Once dry, have kids dip their pinky fingers in orange, red, and yellow paint and press onto apron, just above grill grates, to create flames.

7 Clipboard Frames

"Frame" dads favorite art—whether it's family pictures, maps, or naturalist prints—by simply clipping them into clipboards. For a dynamic look, use different size clipboards and an array of colorful twine to hang.

8 DIY Air Fresheners

Help dad keep his car or office smelling fresh with a DIY tree-shaped air freshener. Added bonus—they are made with essential oils so no nasty chemicals involved.

To make: Trace the shape of a wooden Christmas tree ornament on a scrap of fabric twice. Cut out and glue to the front and back of the ornament. Once dry, soak the fabric with dads favorite scent of essential oil (we used cedar). Thread twine through the loop for hanging.

9 Vintage Baking Tin Hanging Planters

The perfect office decoration, these cute hanging planters are made from vintage baking tins (you can also use new).

To make: For the Bundt pan, thread twine through a series of craft bead (making sure they are large enough to not slip through the center hole of the pan), tie a knot in the twine to keep in place. Thread the twine up through the center hole of a small Bundt pan. Add more craft beads on top, for decoration, then tie a loop in the top of the twine for hanging. Fill pan with pebbles, soil, and desired plants.

For the loaf pan, thread craft beads through two separate pieces of twine, tie knots in the twine to keep in place. Thread one piece of twine through each of the holes in the loaf pan handles. Join the twine above the pan and add more craft beads for decorations. Tie the two pieces of twine together at the top for hanging. Fill pan with pebbles, soil, and desired plants.
